What is a noun?

Apples, buildings, and dogs. What kinds of words are these? These are all examples of nouns. Nouns are words we use for people, places, or things.

Some nouns can have one, or they can have many. For example, you can have one apple, or two apples:

apple (singular)

apple (singular)

apples (plural)

apples (plural)

 

Because you can have one or many of the noun "apple," it is a count noun. When a count noun only has one, we call it "singular." For example, "apple" is singular. When a count noun has many, we call it "plural". "Apples" is plural.
