Usually, when 2 vowels “go walking” the first one “does the talking.”  A few vowel pairs are different.

au = short o

The vowel pair “au” has the same sound as “short o.” Compare the words below.

ou = “ow”

The vowel pair “ou” has the same sound as “ow,” like in the word “now.” Compare the words below.
