description Exercise
Plants are amazing. They can live almost anywhere in the world.
Plants can live in dry places like deserts. It doesn't rain much in the desert. Cacti live where there is no rain. They have a thick stem to hold more water when the rain falls.
Plants can live in cold places. Polar regions have frozen soil, so it’s hard for plants to get water. Bearberry plants have small, shallow roots to get water above the ice. Bearberry plants have strong leaves to protect them from the cold wind.
Plants can live in salty places. A mangrove lives in sea water. Sea water is very salty, so it’s hard for plants to get fresh water. Mangroves have special roots. Their roots take the salt out of the water.
Not all plants live in the wild. Lots of people have plants in their house. House plants live in pots. They need water and light like plants outside.
Some people grow plants in an orchard. An orchard is a group of plants or trees used for food. You might find fruit trees in an orchard. You might find berry bushes in an orchard.
Do you live somewhere cold? You can grow plants that need warm weather in a greenhouse.
A greenhouse can be small enough to go in a garden. Or it can be big enough to fit thousands of plants.
Greenhouses are made out of glass or plastic. They keep the heat inside.
If you do not have space for a greenhouse, you can grow plants in your garden. You can put plants in pots on your patio. Some might need to go in the shade. Some might need lots of sunlight.
You could put a trellis against a wall. Plants will grow up it. Prune it if it gets out of control!
Plants are amazing. They will always find a way to grow. We can learn a lot from plants.
