Predators are always hungry, and they are always looking for prey to eat. What are some of the things that animals can do if they don't want to be someone's lunch?

Some prey animals copy how another animal looks. When animals do this, we call it mimicking.

Sometimes, animals mimic to try and look like a bigger, stronger animal. Look at this animal. It looks like a snake, right? Wrong! It's actually a caterpillar! Not dangerous at all.

Do these two butterflies look the same? Actually, they are not! One is a monarch butterfly. These butterflies are poisonous - predators know not to eat them.

The viceroy butterfly is not poisonous but it tries to look just like the monarch. That way, predators think it is poisonous and they stay away!

Other animals use camouflage. These animals can hide in their surroundings so predators can't see them!

Other animals don't hide or trick their predators. Some can hurt them back! When this pufferfish is in danger, it makes itself big and spiky.

Another way prey can hurt predators is by shooting them with harmful things. Watch this beetle shoot a burning chemical to keep predators away!

Some prey animals are poisonous. They often have bright colours to tell predators to stay away.

This is a a poison arrow frog, but don't let its beautiful colours trick you. A tiny bit of its poison can kill you in seconds!
