Work with a partner. Listen and practice the following conversations:
A: Can I ask you a favour?
B: Sure, what is it?
A: Well, you know I'm working on my engine this weekend, right?
B: Yeah. Oh. I know where this is going.
A: Do you think you could give me a hand on Saturday?
B: Okay. What time?
A: Shaun, can I ask you something?
B: What?
A: Do you think Anna would say yes if I asked her out on a date?
B: Anna? She'd probably say "yes." You should do it. What have you got to lose?
A: Okay, we'll see. Thanks.
A: Diana, could I please ask you a favour?
B: Of course, what's up?
A: Would you mind lending me some money until I get paid next week?
B: Okay, but it depends how much you need.
A: May I borrow $100?
B: $100. Sure, that's fine.
A: Would you mind if I opened the window?
B: No, not at all. Go ahead.
A: Thanks.
B: It's a hot one today, isn't it?
A: Sure is.

The blue parts of the conversations above are requests. Requests are polite ways to ask for something.
