We can use modal verbs in many different ways to change the meanings of our sentences.

Using 'could,' 'might' and 'may'

We use these words in the present tense to guess about a future situation when we don't have much proof. Sometimes, may shows more certainty than could or might.

She could be home soon.

This test might not be too difficult...maybe I won't study!

dog

You may be able to bring your dog.

We use these words in the past tense to guess about a past situation when we don't have much proof.

mammooths

Mammoths may have sounded like elephants.

Einstein

Albert Einstein could have been inspired by books.

Pyramid

The Aztecs might have kept pets.
