Objectives & Sequence: This lesson is intended to be used as a preview of Grammar 12-3.
Part One
Work with a partner. Practice the conversations. Use the recordings to help you with the pronunciation and intonation of the words. Try to mimic the style of the speakers.
A: What was your favourite part of the factory tour?
B: Probably the most interesting part was learning about the robots they use.
A: Oh yeah? It would be cool if you could use it to clean up your room.
B: Haha, that would be cool. These aren’t really those types of Robots. These ones are used for picking up car parts and assembling them.
I see. Interesting.
A: So, how was work today?
B: It wasn’t great. I had to set up for the work meeting. It took me like 3 hours and then the manager called it off at the last minute.
A: I’m sorry. Why did she call off the meeting?
B: She’d received an important phone call I guess.
A: What do you want to do tonight?
B: I have a lot of homework, but I think I might put it off. I’m pretty tired.
A: Well, I’m thinking about going to a concert. Do you want to come, or should I go on without you?
B: You can go on. I think I’ll just stay in tonight.
A: Hey are you ready to go? We are going to be late.
B: Hold on. I just need a few more minutes. I have to put on my jacket and shoes.
A: Hurry up! If I’m late again, I’m going to get fired.
B: Ok Ok. I’ll hurry up. Just a second.
Part Two
With your partner, go back and discuss what you think the phrasal verbs in blue mean. What is a phrasal verb?
