Reading academic work can seem tedious. It is not often as casual as a blog, wiki, or hobby/sports journal. Below is a short list of tips to make academic content more interesting. For most, you will have to read articles that are difficult and are also long. Using these strategies can help you become familiar with strategies to enjoy academic reading.
- When possible, chose your own text
- Unfortunately, this isn't often possible in academics, because the study is generally rigorous; but where possible, seek out your own reading material. Just be certain to seek out credible sources.
- Research your topic, and relate it to familiar information
- New information is often easier to digest when you can attach it to familiar information; relate what you're learning to something you already know (and preferably something you enjoy).
- Mix your media
- There are great resources available to you to help you adapt existing content to your learning style. Like to hear what you're reading while you read it? Try Natural Reader (free text to speech software). Need text from an audio source? You might be able to use Dictation.io (it's not perfect, but can be useful in certain circumstances).
- Talk about what you're learning, before and after
- Even if your subject seems boring, and you can't utilize technology to make things easier, a simple conversation before you begin and after you end can help you find something enjoyable to attach to your academic information. Try questions like:
- What do you find interesting about this topic?
- How do you think this will directly affect our lives?
- How does this relate to the work I love?
- How could we do this better?
- What's next?
- Even if your subject seems boring, and you can't utilize technology to make things easier, a simple conversation before you begin and after you end can help you find something enjoyable to attach to your academic information. Try questions like:
