Reading
Preparing to Write a Summary
One of the best ways to demonstrate that you truly understand a reading is to be able to write a good, comprehensive Summary of it. Here are some steps you should follow when preparing to write a good Summary.
- Skim the text. Read any headings or subheadings you may find. Take note of any graphics that are present as well such as pictures, figures, charts, and tables. Without headings, you can skim the Topic Sentences of each paragraph as you did before in class.
- Read the text. As you read, write down Main Ideas and Supporting Details just as you learned previously. It is important that anything you write is in your own words and rephrases what is said in the text.
- Do not include minor details in your notes at this point.
- If the meaning of the text is still unclear, repeat the process and add more notes where necessary.
