Exercise

First, students open the exercise and make a copy. In the document, they are to write ten nouns, making sure to include things, people, places, and times. These nouns must have some kind of significance in terms of the student's personal relationship with the noun. Some examples are:

  • favourite food
  • month of birth
  • month of joining school
  • desired job
  • name of roommate
  • etc.

Beside each noun, students proceed to write why the noun is significant to them, using Noun Clauses with Question Words.

Examples (Using nouns from the above list):

  • pizza (what I love to eat most)
  • December (when I was born)
  • September (when I joined this school)
  • teacher (what I would love to do in the future for work)
  • John (who I live with)
  • etc.

Next, students work with a partner and read each noun one by one. After reading one noun to their partner, Student One should let his or partner guess the significance of the noun using a noun clause. If the partner is incorrect, Student One can tell the partner the answer. Students take turns reading their ten nouns.
