When we want to imagine something that hasn’t happened we can use the word ‘if’ at the beginning of the sentence. Sometimes we want to say that one thing must happen if another thing happens.

  • If you touch fire, you get burned.
  • If you put water in the freezer, it freezes.
  • If snakes are sacred, they bite.

To make these sentences we need four parts:

  • The word ‘if’
    • If you touch fire, you get burned.
  • A subject + verb in the present tense. This is about the first thing that happens.
    • If you touch fire, you get burned.
  • Then a comma
    • If you touch fire, you get burned.
  • Last a subject + verb in the present tense . This is about what must happen after.
    • If you touch fire, you get burned.
