Your first Novel is The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway. Go online and search for a biography of Ernest Hemingway. Talk in your group about some of the details of his life. What types of material did he write? Was there anything you found interesting about him?
You will read this Novel in 2 weeks and each week must read a certain number of pages, no more and no less, to be ready on the date indicated in your Weekly Schedule. Your reading schedule for Old Man and the Sea is as follows:

Begin reading your Novel, and as you do, you must take notes. These notes must be brought to each Novel session in your schedule to be used in discussion with others. You should be taking notes on:
- The main events happening in the story
- The main characters and their relationships with each other
- The type of conflict that is being created and needs to be overcome
- Major themes and messages that you are learning from the story
- Your opinion and interpretation of the Novel and it's contents
The main activity will involve discussion and use of these notes to demonstrate to everyone that you have read the material and have made an effort to think critically about it.
