description Exercise
When we think of art, we think of pictures. We think of flat paper. But not all art is flat. Some art is 3D.
A sculpture is a kind of art. It is a kind of 3D art. A person who makes a sculpture is called a sculptor.
You can make a sculpture from many things. You can make sculptures out of wood. You can make sculptures out of metal. You can make sculptures out of glass.
This is an ice sculpture. It is made from ice.
This is a wax sculpture. It is made from wax.
This is a bone sculpture. It is made from bone.
Artists sculpt by carving something. They can carve pieces away from a material. They need tools to make their art.
They need a chisel. It is sharp and hard. It cuts the material.
They need a mallet. It is to hit the chisel. They must know how hard to hit the chisel every time.
Some artists use a grinder. It is an electric tool to help you sculpt. It takes less time.
Sculpting can be hard work. One sculpture can take a long time to finish.
Sculptures are not the only kind of 3D art. You can make 3D art with a 3D printer.
The process is like normal printing. You start with a design. You send the design to the printer. Then the printer creates the object using filament.
3D printing is different from sculpting. Sculptors take material away to make something. 3D printing adds layers of material to create something.
An illusion is another type of 3D art. Well, it looks 3D. But it isn't really.
An illusion looks like something else. This might look 3D. But it is flat. It is tricking your brain. It makes you think that it is 3D!
3D art is beautiful. What 3D art would you create?
