fuel gauge indicating low gas

I'd love it to stop raining one of these days.

Verb + Object + Infinitive

In this third verb pattern, we use an object (a person or thing) between the verb and the infinitive:

The man begged me to give him money.

The teacher allowed the student to go to the washroom.

Let's invite George to come with us.

This verb pattern is possible with the following verbs:

  • advise
  • allow
  • invite
  • order
  • remind
  • tell

My father advised me to travel for a year before starting university.

Mom, could you tell my sister to be quiet please?

Would you please remind me to call Jeff?

Allow and advise can be used with this verb pattern or with gerunds, as studied in Grammar 6-1:

Allow

  • Our teacher allows eating in class.
  • Our teacher allows us to eat in class.

Advise

  • I don't advise visiting there in winter. It's much nicer in the spring.
  • I don't advise you to visit there in winter. It's much nicer in the spring.

With or Without Objects

The following verbs can be used with infinitives with or without objects:

  • ask
  • expect
  • need
  • want
  • would like

Compare the differences between the two verb patterns:

Verb + Infinitive Verb + Object + Infinitive
Angela asked to leave.
  • Angela: "May I please leave?"
Angela asked Simon to leave.
  • Angela: "Simon, please leave."
We expect to be there at around 7 PM.
  • We think we will be there at around 7 PM.
We expect you to be there at around 7 PM.
  • We think you will be there at around 7 PM.
I need to help.
  • It is necessary for me to help.
I need you to help.
  • It is necessary for you to help.
