Lots of schools look the same. We use textbooks to learn. Teachers write on whiteboards or blackboards in the classroom. We store our belongings in our lockers. But what makes a school special? It's the people!
Do you know all the people in your school? A school has lots of members of staff. They are all part of the school community. It takes many people to make a school work.
Instructors are a part of the school community. In lots of schools, they are called teachers. They prepare materials for their classes. They help decorate classrooms and display student work. They hold conferences with students and parents. Instructors help students learn.
The principal and vice-principal are part of the school community. Principals and vice-principals help keep the school organized. They make sure instructors have everything they need. They make sure students are safe and happy. They make sure schools have enough money.
The custodian is a part of the school community. Custodians help keep the school clean. They tidy up classrooms and school spaces. They keep things working well in the school. They make sure doors are locked at the end of the day.
The office manager is a part of the school community. They talk to parents and other people on the phone. Office managers organize the front office of the school. They take care of the keys and files in the school. They know when teachers are sick or absent.
The school counsellor is a part of the school community. School counsellors help students who need support. They listen when students want to talk about troubles. They talk to students when they are having problems at school. They work with hospitals and doctors to make sure students are safe and happy.
The support worker is a part of the school community. Support workers help students who have special needs. They work closely with one or two students. They make sure that students with special needs can learn in the best way. They help teachers take care of all the students.
A school might have a prefect. A prefect is a student with more responsibility than others. They are chosen because of their good behaviour. They make sure other students behave too.
But who are the most important people in a school? It's the learners. They are the ones that make a school special. Their job is to learn.
