What makes feedback effective?

Feedback can be considered effective if the receiver is able to appropriately adjust their behaviour based on the feedback. In order to achieve this, the person giving the feedback and the recipient of the feedback both have important responsibilities. The person giving feedback must deliver it in such a way that allows the recipient to specifically identify and understand the area for improvement. Equally, the recipient of the feedback must be open and willing to accept the feedback before they can act on it.

Ineffective feedback

Although feedback is now regularly encouraged by organizations and professionals, feedback is frequently delivered so badly that it negates its intention of improvement. When feedback is delivered poorly, it can cause significant negative consequences, including:

  • disengaging people
  • reducing a person's confidence
  • creating conflict
  • reducing performance
  • adversely affecting organizational culture
