Making plurals
For most words, we make plurals by adding 's' to the end of the word.
But there are also words that do not have a plural. These are called noncount nouns. It sounds strange, but there are some things that you cannot count.
Noncount nouns
Many noncount nouns are not physical things - they are ideas. You can't count love because it is a feeling. You can't count money because it is an idea, not a currency. You can't have 'six moneys'!
Here is a list of some of the most common noncount nouns:
- love
- food
- fun
- air
- power
- water
- money
- electricity
- music
- work
Remember: Some of these words may seem confusing. Can't you count money? Liquids and gases are all uncountable nouns, because you must measure liquids by volume or weight, you can't separate liquids or gases into individual parts.
