What are Gerunds?
Gerunds are verbs that end in ing and function as a noun in a sentence. They are found in places where usually we use a noun:

- Gliding is an enjoyable activity.
- Watching gliding is an enjoyable activity.

- He is thinking about airplanes.
- He is thinking about flying airplanes.

- My hobby is my homebuilt airplane.
- Her hobby is working on her homebuilt airplane.

- Her engine noise is annoying.
- Her airplane engine noise is annoying.
We can make negative gerunds by using not + gerund:
- She asked about not paying landing fees.
- Not sweeping the runway every night is unsafe.
