PAPER #1: Expository Essay

Your first paper (an essay is also called a paper) will be an explanation of something you feel you are a “master” of. Once you have chosen your topic, begin organizing and drafting your paper.

Topics: Try to be original in your topic. What do you know about that most of your classmates
won’t? Do you have an unusual hobby that you can describe? Think of something original. Good topics include customs from your culture, hobbies, government or religion.

Format: 2-4 pages, MLA format (Studied in Structure 1-4). Typed, double-spaced, Times New Roman, 12 point font.

Outside sources: As this is your first essay, no outside sources are required. Please write
this paper based on your own knowledge. This way you can focus more on your writing than on
researching and documenting properly. We will discuss research and proper format later in the
quarter. For now, please do not use outside sources for this essay. If you are actually a “master”
of something, you shouldn’t need to research it.
