Good active listening skills:

  Make eye contact with the speaker.

  Have a positive body posture (turn towards the speaker, use eye contact, lean forward).

  Have positive body language (smile, nod, respond emotionally to what the speaker is saying).

  Make listening noises (mm hmm, uh huh, …).

  Shadow the speaker’s important points.

  Use door openers like Tell me more about that to keep the other person talking.

  Focus on the speaker and topic.

  Don’t get distracted by your own thoughts.

  Don’t interrupt the other person. Let the speaker finish, and then respond.

  If it’s appropriate, take notes during important conversations.

  Paraphrase what the speaker said to make sure that you are both on the same page.
