Pharmacology

Students explore vocabulary and activities about the interrelation of pharmacology and STEM disciplines.

Rephrasing Skills

Students practice paraphrasing and summarizing skills in a variety of lessons throughout the unit.

APA Guidelines

Students continue practicing APA format and citation rules in numerous activities throughout the unit.  

 Math Vocabulary

Lessons continue introducing statistics and probability vocabulary from correlation to sampling, and students practice these words in exercises.

Presentation

Students practice both impromptu and rehearsed presentations on topics related to pharmacology. 

Cause and Effect Writing

In their unit essay and additional exercises throughout the unit, students practice cause and effect vocabulary and organizational skills.

Unit Introduction Reading Listening
6-1 Introduction to Pharmacology

Students read definitions and watch a video introducing pharmaceutical and biological drugs, and they discuss what they've learned. 

6-2 How Does a Clinical Trial Work?

Students read a description introducing concepts related to clinical trials. Afterwards, students answer discussion questions.

6-1 Addiction

This lesson introduces important topics related to addiction. Students complete a variety of vocabulary, reading, writing, citation, and research exercises.

6-2 Treating Chemical or Behavioral Addiction

In this research-focused lesson, students find more information on key topics related to addiction treatment. Students also practice note-taking and organization skills.

6-3 Phases of Clinical Trials

This reading describes the three phases of clinical trials for testing pharmaceutical drugs on humans. The exercise focuses on close reading and multiple choice. 

6-1 Chemical and Behavioral Addiction

In this lesson, students watch an interview with Dr. Patrick Barnes, who explains the differences between chemical and behavioral addiction. Students complete vocabulary, note-taking and comprehension exercises.

6-2  An Integrative Approach to Treating Addiction

Students learn vocabulary for parts of the brain and watch a video interview with Dr. Elizabeth Stuller on treating addiction. In the exercise, students practice note-taking and organizing skills. 

6-3 Pharmaceutical Drugs vs Supplements

Students read definitions for phamaceutical drugs and supplements and answer discussion questions. Students watch a video about the possible dangers of supplements and practice listening for numbers and specific information. 

Media & Tech Math Use of English
6-1 How Do Vitamins Work?

Students watch a video on vitamins and work in groups to answer comprehension questions about types of vitamins and their effects on the body.

6-2 Superbugs

Students watch a video on the history of antibiotics and the rise of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Students answer vocabulary and comprehension questions and also complete a related reading.

6-3 EpiPen Controversy

Students read an article and watch a video about a prescription medical device called the EpiPen. The exercises include comprehension and research questions.

 
6-1 Statistics & Probability: Correlation

A lesson and exercises introducing key vocabulary used in statistics and probability, focusing on correlation. 

6-2 Statistics & Probability: Sampling and Surveys

Students learn and practice vocabulary and pronunciation for words related to sampling, particularly simple random sampling and stratified sampling. 

6-3 Math Review: Real World Practice

Students read an abstract about misuse of sampling in the medical field and then a full article. The exercises focus on summarizing and comprehension.  

 

6-1 Decoding a Prescription

In this lesson, students learn abbreviations used by doctors when they write prescriptions. Students practice decoding and creating sample prescriptions with this new vocabulary.

6-2 Impromptu Presentation

Students practice impromptu presentations on ancillary topics, building their confidence speaking English.

6-3 Rehearsed Presentation

Students create a practiced or rehearsed presentation based on one of seven pre-selected articles from Scientific American.

6-4 Careers in Pharmacology

This is a reading with descriptions of 17 different non-pharmacist careers for people with backgrounds in pharmacology. Students research several of these jobs online to complete the exercises.  

Writing
6-1 Rephrasing Vocabulary

Students review paraphrasing and practice identifying vocabulary and short phrases that can be rephrased. 

6-2 Rephrasing Sentences

Students continue their review of paraphrasing, this time focusing on changing grammar and word order. 

6-3 Essay Skills - Cause-Effect

Students learn vocabulary used for writing about cause and effect, focusing on verbs. Students practice these words in exercises. 

6-4 Essay Skills - Cause-Effect

Students learn more vocabulary and idioms specific to cause and effect and practice using these words in exercises. 

6-5 APA References

In this lesson, students practice writing out full citations (both in-text and reference page citations) for websites.

6-6 Essay

Students use the skills they've learned in this unit for cause and effect vocabulary and using APA citation to write a Cause and Effect essay about pharmaceutical advertising.
