This lesson is an extension of Listening 2-2 and requires that the students have completed it.
Part One: Warm Up
Discuss the following questions with your partner(s).
- What are some common requests at school? At work? At home? With friends?
- How comfortable are you refusing someone’s request? Why?
- Do you think it’s easier to refuse a request in writing or face-to-face? Why?
- How different do you think it is to refuse a request at school or work than it is at home or with friends? What differences are there?
Part Two: Getting Ready to Write
In this lesson, you’re going to learn how to respond to requests in writing. We’re going to use a written response to Nadia’s voicemail requesting a change at Brookway College from Listening 2-1 as an example.
Before you start, discuss with your partner(s) what you can remember about Nadia’s message. Who was she? What was she requesting from the college?
