What is Metamorphosis?

butterfly

Metamorphosis is a biological process by which an animal physically alters its body after birth or hatching. This involves a conspicuous and relatively abrupt change in the animal's body structure through cell growth and differentiation. Insects, amphibians, molluscs, and crustaceans are just some of the animals that undergo metamorphosis, which is usually accompanied by a change in habitat or behavior. A common example of a creature undergoing a metamorphic change can be found in the lifecycle of a butterfly. A butterfly has four stages in its lifestyle. Those stages are egg, caterpillar, chrysalis (cocoon), and butterfly. A butterfly hatches from the egg as a caterpillar, a small worm-like insect. As a caterpillar, it eats large amount of plant matter until it is ready to undergo metamorphosis. The caterpillar makes a chrysalis around it out of silk and then goes through drastic changes. It’s fat, worm-like body metamorphosizes into a butterfly; an insect that flies and eats the nectar of flowers. The change from a caterpillar to a butterfly is one of the best examples of metamorphosis found in nature.
