Of all the different aspects of essay structure we’ve learned, none is more critical to success than the Thesis Statement. Basically, the Thesis Statement is a single sentence summary of the main idea of your essay. We can boil down all Thesis Statements to a simple formula:
- A is right because 1, 2, and 3.
Canada is the best place to immigrate to because it has a strong economy, lots of services for newcomers, and a safe, clean environment.
- A is right: Canada is the best place to immigrate to
- because 1, 2, and 3: it has a strong economy, lots of services for newcomers, and a safe, clean environment.
All Thesis Statements follow this general pattern.
Three Keys to an Effective Thesis
In order to be effective, a Thesis Statement needs to have three things. First, it must be focused. There is only so much you can deal with in a single essay, so you have to make sure that your Thesis Statement is not too broad and not too general.
