Repeated comparative adjectives

You can repeat the comparative adjective to emphasize that something is changing progressively.

  • If he keeps investing, he will get richer and richer.
  • The sound was becoming louder and louder.
  • Every time I see him, he is more and more handsome.

Parallel Comparative Adjectives

In a parallel comparative structure, the sentence contains two comparative adjectives in separate clauses, the second being a direct result of the first.

  • The older my grandmother gets, the more beautiful she becomes. (As my grandmother gets older, she becomes more beautiful.)
  • The cheaper the car is, the better it is for my bank account. (If the car is cheap, it’s better for my bank account.)

Note the use of the before the comparative adjectives.
