Part One: Warm Up
Discuss the following questions with your partner(s).
- Compare and contrast living in an apartment vs. living in a house? Think about the following:
- cost
- taking care of the place: cleaning, fixing things, etc.
- convenience
- comfort
- Which would you prefer to live in?
- Have you ever rented an apartment or a house? If so, what was it like? If not, what do you think it would be like?
- What’s a landlord? What sorts of things do they do? What kind of interactions would you have with your landlord if you rented an apartment or house?
- What is a tenant? What makes a good tenant?
- Do you think the relationship between a tenant and a landlord is usually more formal or more casual? Why?
Part Two: Getting Ready to Write
In Reading 4-1, you read about two programs intended to help people save money on their power bills by upgrading their homes. In this lesson, you will imagine you are renting an apartment or house and would like to participate in one of those programs (or a similar program that you found yourself). Because you don’t own the place, you will need to write an email to your landlord to ask if they would be willing to join one of the programs.
