In this lesson, you will focus on forming indirect questions and making indirect requests.

Indirect Questions

Indirect questions are a way to ask for information in a more polite way. They are often used in more formal situations or when communicators do not have a close relationship.

Would like to know + wh- noun clauses

To form this structure, you simply add the wh- noun clause to would like to know. It allows you to ask indirect wh- questions.

  • Janine would like to know what time you are coming over tomorrow.
  • I would like to know when she first realized that she wanted to be a professional dancer.
  • In order to better understand the disease, researchers would like to know why it affects some people but not others.
