The word 'fast' here is an adjective. It changes the noun 'runner.'
The word 'extremely' here is an adverb. It changes the adjective 'fast.'

- extremely
- fairly
- pretty
- quite
- somewhat
- so
- very
They range in meaning from weak to very strong.
