We can use ‘may’ or ‘might’ to politely ask for permission to do something.
- May I go to the washroom?
- Might I ask you a question?
- May I borrow your pen?
To use ‘might’ or ‘may’ to ask a question we need three parts.
- The verb ‘may’ or ‘might’...
- May I go?
- A subject...
- May I go?
- And another verb.
- May I go?
And of course a question mark at the end!
To answer such a question we can either use ‘Yes’ or ‘No’.
We can also say ‘Yes, you may’ or ‘No, you may not’.
