Get into groups and get out the notes you took on The Old Man and the Sea for pages 42-70. Go through your notes and discuss them in great detail, being sure to add to your own notes if needed. Try to consider the following questions as you talk:
- What messages do you see in this section of the novel? Is there something the author is trying to teach us about?
- What more do you learn about Santiago's character? What is his relationship with the sea and what does it represent to him?
- Why doesn't Santiago give up and leave the fish out at sea? What drives him to work so hard to bring the fish back to his village?
- Do you feel that Santiago was defeated? Did the sea win? Was there no winner?
