Paraphrasing is a common and legitimate way to include another author's work into your own writing. A paraphrase is a piece of writing that presents the specific details of source material in a new form, with a reference (e.g. citation or footnote) to the original source. While the meaning of the passage remains constant, a paraphrase is distinct from the original passage in at least three ways:

1. Use synonyms

the paraphrase includes the writer's own words instead of those used in the original passage.  This is often accomplished through the use of key word synonyms from the original text.

2. Change the Word Order

the paraphrase usually has a different syntax from the original text.  This involves changing the order of words in the sentences paraphrased, or inverting the subject and object of the original sentence

3. Substitute Grammatical Forms
