We use the present continuous to talk about what is happening now.

Spelling Rules for the main verb in the Present Continuous.

VERB + “-ing” | Just add “-ing”. Acrescente “-ing”. |
catch → catching talk → talking sing → singing study → studying |
Verbs ending in “-e” Verbos terminados em “-e”. |
If the verb ends in “-e”, take away the “-e” and add “-ing”. Se o verbo termina em “-e”, elimine a letra “-e” e acrescente “-ing”. |
write → writing drive → driving take → taking |
Verbs ending in consonant + vowel + consonant. Verbos terminados em consoante + vogal + consoante. |
If the verbs are one-syllable and end in consonant + vowel + consonant, we double the last consonant and add “-ing”. Se o verbo for monossilábico e terminar em consoante + vogal + consoante, repetimos a última consoante e acrescentamos "-ing". |
sit → sitting hug → hugging run → running |
If they are two-syllable verbs ending in consonant + vowel + consonant, with the stress on the last syllable, we double the last consonant and add “-ing”. Se o verbo tiver duas sílabas e terminar em consoante + vogal + consoante, só repetimos a consoante final se a última sílaba for tônica para então acrescentamos "-ing". |
