Vocabulary

Introduction and The Hockey Rink

1. pass (v) - to give sth to sm; in sports, this is the exchange of the ball or another playing object
2. tip (n) - a small piece of helpful advice about how to do sth better or more easily {this is only one of many meanings and uses of tip}
3. face (v) - to stand across from the front of sth, or to stand in front of another person looking into her face
4. face-off (n) - a challenge or confrontation, usually in sports or competition
5. crease (n) - the area inside the blue line in front of the goal

Shooting and Passing the Puck in Ice Hockey

1. accurately (adv) - carefully and without mistakes in details
2. offense (n) - the attacking or aggressive player or team, usually in control of the ball
3. guideline (n) - a rule or suggestion about the best way to do sth
4. cradle (v) - to hold gently, or as if with a sort of embrace
5. blade (n) - the cutting edge or usable edge of an instrument
6. recipient (n) - the person who receives sth
7. likely (adv) - very possibly
8. defensive (adj) - protecting, or retreating from danger
9. zone (n) - an area that is special
10. elevate (v) - to lift off the ground

Ice Hockey Penalties Explained

1. penalty (n) - a punishment
2. penalty box (n) - the place where players must sit and wait when they have been removed from playing as a punishment for doing something wrong
3. misconduct (n) - improper behaviour
4. harsh (adj) - very severe
5. jab (v) - to poke
6. check (v) - to physically stop sm
7. opponent (n) - an opposing person or team in a competition
8. impending (adj) - about to happen
9. therefore (adv) - for that reason

11. assess (v) - to impose sth on sm, very often as punishment

13. interfere (v) - to get in the way of sth which makes progress more difficult
14. impede (v) - to slow the progress of sth or make sth very difficult to do
15. deliberately (adv) - purposefully; the opposite of accidentally

18. altercation (n) - a fight or argument
19. referee (n) - a person who makes sure that players follow the rules of a game
20. blade (n) - the flat or cutting edge of sth

5. “up ice” (adv {?}; a specific term used only in hockey) - forward into the opposition’s territory

21. smarts (adj; slang) - intelligence and ability, usually in a specific area

3. jersey (n) - a uniform
4. the bench (n) - the place where team members sit while waiting to play

7. invincible (adj) - not capable of being conquered or hurt
8. yap (v; slang) - to talk in a way that shows annoyance or disinterest in another person; the word “yap” sounds like the continual barking of a small dog
