Modal verbs are a type of auxiliary verb, which means they help the main verb in the sentence.

Modal verbs are followed by the base form of a verb.

  • I should go to the doctor.
  • He should go to the doctor.

We do not use the auxiliary verb do to make negatives and questions.

We use not for negatives, and we invert the modal verb and the subject to make a question.

  • You must not be late for the exam.
  • Should I call you tomorrow?
