Objectives & Sequence: This lesson is intended to be used as a preview of Grammar 11-3.

Part One

Work with a partner. Practice the conversations. Use the recordings to help you with the pronunciation and intonation of the words. Try to mimic the style of the speakers.

car in flames

A: What do you think about the special effects, Phil?

B: Special effects? You mean those scenes in movies where there are explosions and car chases? I love finding out how they do those scenes?

A: Me too. Don’t you ever wonder how dangerous that job is though? It looks like it could be pretty scary.

B: Yeah it could be. I think you have to know what you are doing if you want that job.

RC car

A: Hey what are you working on?

B: Ohh, I’m playing with this new RC car I got for my birthday. I need to connect a new battery pack and plug it in and charge it.

A: That’s pretty cool. Where did you get something like this?

B: You know, I’m not sure. My father got it for me. It’s a pretty popular hobby though. My dad said the store was huge and filled with tons of parts.

A: Well, it looks like a lot of fun.

gym

A: Hey where are you going? I thought we were going to play video games?

B: I’m sorry. I need to work out today. I haven’t been to the gym in weeks.

A: Really? You are going to ditch me for the gym?

B: Hey, why don’t you come with me. It looks like you could use going to the gym more.

A: Gee. Thanks. I think I’ll pass. Wake me up when you get back though.

broke in car

A: Hey what’s wrong?

B: Someone broke in my car and stole my laptop.

A: Ohh no. I’m so sorry. Have you called the police?

B: Yea. The operator told me an officer will call me back in a few minutes.

A: I can’t believe that happened. Why did you leave your bag in the car?

B: I keep thinking the same thing.

Part Two

With your partner, go back and discuss what you think the phrasal verbs in blue mean. What is a phrasal verb?
