The ability to clearly define a term is an important academic skill. You may choose to begin an essay with a definition for a specific effect, or you may need to include definitions of specific terms within the essay to make your ideas clear for the reader. Also, the entire argument of a persuasive essay can be centred around the subjective definition of abstract concepts. For example, "What is art?" or "Is Walter White a tragic hero?" Therefore, a definition can be a single sentence or a five-page essay.
