Sentence Fragments
The problem with the sentences above is that they are not complete—they are sentence fragments. Sentence fragments are a common mistake that students make in writing. There are several reasons why a sentence is incomplete:
- Is the most beautiful place in my city. (No subject)
- My brother and I deciding to go skydiving. (No main verb)
- Since I was a child. (No independent clause)
For a sentence to be complete, it needs a subject, a verb, and at least one independent clause. If it is missing one of those things, the sentence is incomplete and is called a fragment. Fragments are mistakes and need to be fixed. Here are ways to correct the sentence fragments above:
- Chain Bridge is the most beautiful place in my city.
- My brother and I decided to go skydiving.
- I have played piano since I was a child.
