This unit is designed to teach us to use data and facts to build a good argument to support our ideas. Get together with a partner or small group and discuss the following questions.

  • What’s your opinion on smoking? Explain.
  • Choose one option and explain your thinking.
    1. You are a very rich and successful business man, but you have no free time to spend with your family.
    2. You work a lower class job and make little money, but you have a lot of time to spend time with your family and do activities you enjoy.
  • What are you favorite companies? Why do you like them?
  • What makes a successful commercial?
  • Have you ever worked a job in retail? What makes a good salesman?
  • Have you ever had to ask your parents for money? Were you successful?
  • When is the last time you asked a person a favor?
  • What is the best way to ask a person a favor?
  • What would you say to your teacher if you forgot to finish an important assignment?
  • Have you ever had an argument with a friend? What happened? How did you resolve the argument?
  • Do you see any weaknesses or problems in your country? How would you fix those problems?
  • If your computer broke and the store you purchased it from wouldn’t give you a refund, what would you do?

Exercise

You will now select two questions to write in more detail about. Open up the attached exercise and write a detailed response to two of the previous questions. Once you write your response you can record yourself reading this for extra credit. Ask your teacher to show you how.
