We can use so in a compound sentence to show effect or result.
- There were delays at the airport, so we had to travel by train.
We can also express result with transition words like therefore, as a result, or consequently:
- There were delays at the airport. Therefore, we had to travel by train.
- There were delays at the airport; as a result, we had to travel by train.
