9-3 Making Questions

Objectives & Sequence: This lesson is intended to be used as a review of Grammar - Past Simple Questions.

Part One

Students work in pairs and open the corresponding pages below. The activity is organized in two parts. First Student One asks questions for the missing information in his or her eight sentences. Student Two listens to Student One's questions and checks that they match the answer listed on his or her page. Student Two then goes on and answers the question. Then students switch roles.

Make questions and ask your partner:

You played volleyball ... (where ?)
You asked ... (who ?)
He retired ... (when ?)
The teacher opened ... (what ?)
She bought the pen ... (where ?)
You finished ... (what time ?)
He needed ... (what ?)
They used ... (what ?)

Listen to your partner's questions. Make sure each question is correct and then answer it:

Where did you talk? (We talked at the park.)
What time did they arrive? (They arrived at 6:00 PM.)
What did he want? (He wanted money.)
What did she close? (She closed the window.)
Where did he prefer? (He preferred the beach.)
What kind of movie did you watch? (I watched an exciting movie.)
What time did he come to the party? (He came to the party at 8:30 PM.)
Who did she marry? (She married Jeff.)

Listen to your partner's questions. Make sure each question is correct and then answer it:

Where did you play volleball? (I played volleyball at the beach.)
Who did you ask? (I asked my teacher.)
When did he retire? (He retired in 1999.)
What did the teacher open? (The teacher opened the door.)
Where did she buy the pen? (She bought the pen in Spain.)
What time did you finish? (I finished at 10:20 AM.)
What did he need? (He needed some water.)
What did they use? (They used my basketball.)

Part Two

A: Did you work out?

B: No, I didn't.

No, I didn't. = I didn't work out.

A: Did you see a movie?

B: Yes, we did.

Yes, we did. = We saw a movie.

Work with a partner. Practice the dialogues and then discuss the meanings of the answers, like in the two examples above. Listen to check your answers.
