Throughout this unit, you’ve learned about different ways that neurons affect how we think, move and behave.  Advances in neuroscience have produced incredible results, like the ability to control prosthetic limbs. It has also given us a range of problems we have never encountered before. For example, bionic limbs could be created that would allow athletes to outperform their top peers, which could change the future of sports.

You will prepare a 5-10 minute Problem / Solution slideshow presentation. You will identify a potential problem or problems that may occur in the futue due to advances in neuroscience and then present either ways to prevent or solve these problems. Choose one of the areas below to explore:

  • Medicine
  • Sports
  • Memory
  • Work

You can use Google Slides or Prezi to make the slideshows for your presentation. You can use Powerpoint to make the slideshows for your presentation.

Tips for Problem / Solution Presentations

Brainstorm by thinking about what is important to you

Are you finding it difficult to imagine a future problem? Examine what you value and what you fear losing. What is important to you? Money? Justice? Freedom? Safety? Equality? In what ways could advances in neuroscience negatively affect one of these topics?

Thoroughly explain the problem

For this presentation, you are making an educated guess about a problem that will occur in the future. When will this problem happen? In what situation? Why will it happen? Why is it a problem? Who or what is affected by this problem?

Be specific about your solution

"We should make a law to stop this," is not helpful or specific. Who should make the law? What should the law require or prohibit? Who would it affect? In what situations would it be applicable?
