“A” and “AN”

'A' and 'AN' mean the same, but they are used with different words.

  • A is used if it is before a consonant
  • b, c, d, f, g, h, j, k, l, m, n, p, q, r, s, t, v, w, x, y
  • a dog
  • a teacher
  • a carrot
  • a football

An is used before a vowel.

  • a, e, i, o, u
  • an apple
  • an actor
  • an elephant
  • an octopus
