When do we make comparisons?

Comparisons are used a great deal in IELTS writing and speaking.

  • Writing Task 1: comparing information presented in a single bar chart, or comparing information presented in two different kinds of graph
  • Writing Task 2: comparing two opinions, or solutions to problems, before reaching a logical conclusion
  • Speaking: comparing your present situation with one in the past

Comparative adjectives

We use comparative adjectives to compare two or more people, things, or places:

Younger students will always be noisier than older students.

or the same thing, person, or place at two different times:

I’m much better at English now than I was last year.
