A fun element of poetry is that it often breaks many rules of the English language, but you must first understand the rules of poetry in order to effectively break them.

Rhyme

Poetry comes in many different forms and styles; however, many of these styles use similar elements. When people think of poetry, rhyme is what they think of first. Poetry doesn’t have to rhyme, but rhyme is common. Words rhyme when they sound very similar like “cat” and “fat.”  There are many different kinds of rhyme found in poetry, but here are two common types:
