The relationship between humans and animals is very complicated. There are so many different kinds of relationships to think about. Pets are just a few of the animals that humans interact with.

Are pets and humans in a mutualistic partnership? I guess you could say that everyone benefits. A person enjoys their pet's company, and the pet enjoys being taken care of.

Maybe humans and pets aren't in an equal relationship. We seem to like hanging out with our pets, but maybe they aren't affected by us at all! Maybe they just keep us around to humour us.

Humans have different kinds of symbiosis with different animals. We might have mutualistic partnerships with pets, but we certainly don't with the animals we eat. Why is that?
