Part C of the Listening section focuses on three Long Talks. These talks consist of a lecture, usually from a university professor who is either male or female, that lasts from 60 to 90 seconds (about 150-250 words). The narrator introduces each of the four or five questions by its number following each talk. You will not see any of the talk or the questions printed and each question is played only one time. All parts of the Listening section are multiple choice, so all you will see will be the four answer choices. Here is an example of what you hear and what you see for this course:

Example

You will hear:

Narrator Questions 38 through 41. Listen to a conversation between two people. The man is giving the woman information.
woman Before I start today's sociology lecture, I'd like to talk with you about the papers that you should be working on. As you know, the topic for the paper is the relationship between gun control and violence. The paper itself is due in two weeks, but I would like to see your outlines by Friday of this week so that I can be sure that you are on the right track with the assignment.
You need to do some research for this paper, so you should be spending some time in the library. I would like you to have at least three books and at least three recent journal articles as sources.
The paper should be five pages long; in addition to the five pages of composition, you should have a title page and a one-page reference list of the sources that you used in preparing the paper.
Narrator Number 38.When does this talk probably take place?

You will read:

  1.
    • On the first day of class
    • In the middle of the semester
    • At the end of class
    • In the final week of the semester

You will hear:

Narrator Number 39. When is the paper due?

You will read:

  1.
    • Later today
    • By Friday of this week
    • In two weeks
    • In three weeks

You will hear:

Narrator Number 40. What types of references should be used in writing the paper?

You will read:

  1.
    • Journal and magazine articles
    • Books from outside the library
    • Books listed in student journals
    • Both books and journals

You will hear:

Narrator Number 41. How many total pages should be in the paper, including title page and the reference list?

You will read:

  1.
    • Two
    • Three
    • Five
    • Seven

In Number 38, the phrase “should be working on” shows there have been classes before this one but that the papers are still in process, so the second choice, "In the middle of the semester" is correct. In Number 39, the information is given directly, so the third choice "in two weeks", is correct. In Number 40, students are asked to have at least three “books” and “recent journals” and the first three choices do not include these correctly, so the fourth choice, “both books and journals,” is correct. In Number 41, the paper itself is 5 pages long, but it must include a “title page” and “reference list, making the total length seven pages.
