In this lesson, we'll be learning a few more ways to use gerunds and infinitives. First, we'll be looking at how to use gerunds with prepositions. In the second half of the lesson, we'll be looking at how to use "in order" with an infinitive.

Prepositions Review

What is a preposition? Let's do a brief review. Prepositions are words that link pronouns, nouns, and phrases in a sentence. The most important thing that the preposition does is that tells what the noun (or object) of the sentence is doing.

He read the book during class. (The preposition "during" tells when the book was read.)

Prepositions can also occur as a group of words. These are called prepositional phrases, and act just like prepositions. Here are some more examples of prepositions and prepositional phrases:

  • without
  • through
  • within
  • against
  • on
  • in addition to
  • before
  • beside
  • above
  • of
