Remember, when we compare two things, we use the comparative form. When we want to compare something to everything in its category, we use the superlative form. For example, if we want to say that ants are smaller than all other insects, we can say:

  • Ants are the smallest insects.

Superlatives are made in two ways:

  1. by adding -est to the end of the adjective
  2. by adding the word “most” before the adjective

-est

Adjectives that are short (i.e.: only have one syllable) become superlative by adding -est. Adjectives that have two syllables often become superlative by adding -est, as well.

One syllable

  • Small → smallest
  • Big → biggest
  • Old → oldest
  • Slow → slowest

Two syllables

  • Pretty → prettiest
  • Curly → curliest
  • Happy → happiest
  • Funny → funniest
