Can you predict the future? It's impossible, isn't it? Well that's what meteorologists try to do every day.
Do you know what a meteorologist is? A meteorologist is a person who studies the weather. They learn all about different types of weather and why they happen.
Meteorologists learn about storms. They can tell us why storms happen. They try to warn us when a bad storm is coming.
They learn about clouds. They tell us why clouds form. They warn us when the rain is coming. They warn us when the snow is coming. They tell us if schools will be closed!
They learn about wind. They can tell us what makes wind. They can warn us when there will be strong winds. Their job can keep us safe and prepare us for what is to come.
They also tell us about the temperature outside. They can tell us if it will be hot or cold. They tell us if we need a jacket or not.
Meteorologists work outside and inside. They go outside to study the weather. They might even go outside when it is dangerous. They have to be close to storms to learn about them.
They go inside to study weather maps. Weather maps tell them about wind, rain, and storms. They look at weather maps to learn more about how weather works.
They work inside to give us a weather report. They work in a studio. You might see them on the news.
Have you ever seen a weather reporter using a map on television? That map is not really there. They do a weather report using a special green screen. The special effects artists put the map in afterwards. The map is digital. They are pointing at a plain screen!
Meteorologists tell us if we will have a nice weekend. They tell us when we should take a vacation. But they can also save our lives. Imagine what life was like before we could study the weather.
