The Past Simple is quite different from the Present Perfect.
The Past Simple is used to explain the finished past.
- My great grandfather worked in many high-class restaurants. (He's dead.)
- I've worked in many fine restaurants. (I'm alive.)
When we use the Past Simple, there is no focus on a present result.
- I cut my finger. (It might be fine now.)
- I've cut my finger. (It's bleeding now.)
- He bought a cup of coffee. (He may not have coffee now.)
- He's bought a cup of coffee. (He has a cup of coffee now.)
The Past Simple is used to describe things in the definite past.
- We met two years ago. (definite)
- We have met. (indefinite)
- He went to France last year. (definite)
- He has been to France. (indefinite)
- Did you eat sushi last night? (definite)
- Have you eaten sushi? (indefinite)
